Max Brearley

Originally from Yorkshire, I'm now based in the Margaret River wine region in Western Australia. My beat stretches far beyond Australia, spending an increasing amount of time in Indonesia (particularly Bali), as well as regular returns to the UK and Europe more widely. I’ve been writing about food and drink for over 16 years, first in the UK and then Australia. I've always been freelance and have worked as a journalist, editor, consultant, digital producer, festival director, curator and host.

Regular work

As an editor I currently lead the West Australian Good Food Guide, which has more recently seen me overseeing an expansion into Indonesia. As a features writer I've most recently been working with The Australian, Australian Financial Review, Conde Nast Traveler, delicious. Australia, Selector, and Halliday. On occasion I still write for The Guardian, The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. I have written Between Meals on Substack since 2021.

Commercial interest

I've worked with brands and organisations on creative content, events and hosting through my previous businesses, Offshoot Creative and Gather Round. Clients included Tourism WA, Tourism Australia, IMG (Western Australia Gourmet Escape), Truffle Kerfuffle: Australian Truffle Festival (as event director 2015-2018), Brookfield Properties, West Australian Opera, Perth Writers Festival, Buy West Eat Best, Your Margaret River, AusDance, Pullman Hotels and Resorts (Accor), CitiBank, and the State Buildings.
