Becca Knowlton

A few months into the pandemic, I found myself laid off from my career in the entertainment industry. Every decision I had made in my life had led me to that point, and now it was gone. I made one of the scariest decisions of my life and pivoted to pursue my dream career in writing. I was starting over in my late thirties with no connections and limited knowledge of publishing. I moved out of Los Angeles and enrolled in a copyediting program at NYU.

It took a few years to work up the courage to submit a piece of writing. I started small with a food review at a niche food publication. Within a few weeks, I received an email from the editor at Beyondish offering me a freelance food writing position. I wrote two articles for him, but I was too nervous to contact other outlets. In July 2025, I decided to start pitching. That month, I was published in Eater, one of the most widely read food publications in the world. By September, I had sold commissioned articles to a London-based media company and a regional Oregon magazine. Now, within ten months of freelance writing, I am an internationally published writer and journalist who has had 15 articles commissioned across seven publications, with several pending articles. Through hard work and determination, I have been fortunate to break into a tough industry in a very short amount of time.
