Scoop of the Month

Ruth Watson writes: ‘My favourite ice cream in this country has always been Marine Ices. Even when I moved to Suffolk, over 40 years ago, I never missed an opportunity to drop by their place opposite the Round House and grab a cone of coffee gelato from the open kiosk that fronted the Italian café.

‘Last year we took over a little shop across the road from the entrance to Framlingham Castle, with the intention of selling ice cream. Imagine my ecstasy when I discovered that Criterion Ices, who have a creamery outside Bury St Edmunds, had been making gelato for Marine Ices for several years before the café owner retired – sheer serendipity that we could sell locally made ice cream but with an authentic Italian flavour and texture.

‘The Ice Cream Shop re-opened in mid-April, trading from midday to 6pm on Wednesday to Sunday. It’s already busy even though it has not been at all warm. Here’s hoping for a hot summer holiday period when we’ll be open every day.’
