Tom Waller

I spent the first part of my career in the corporate world before a redundancy gave me the push I needed to follow my real passion, that of, food and photography. For the past decade, I’ve worked as a professional food photographer and videographer, helping chefs and restaurants across the UK capture the visual beauty of their food.

More recently, I’ve built a YouTube channel called Dining Fables, where I explore the visual side of food, exploring how chefs design, plate, and present dishes to make them look as good as they taste. The channel has grown into a space for chefs, home cooks, and food lovers who want to understand food as a form of design, not just decoration. It’s a niche area, but one that (to the best of my knowledge) isn’t very well covered in culinary schools, online or in print.

That idea led me to write The Plating Gym. A book I created entirely myself, from writing and photography to design and layout. It’s my attempt to make the creative side of plating more accessible by teaching practical design principles for the plate. The project was funded on Kickstarter in just 72 hours and is now selling directly through my website.

In short, I’ve spent the last few years trying to bridge the gap between food and design, helping people see that how something looks can be just as meaningful as how it tastes.
