First of all let me welcome you all – members and visitors alike!
Just under 30 years ago, a small group of eminent food writers came together to create the Guild of Food Writers and we are certainly fortunate still to have a few of those original members. Their vision has led to an organisation boasting more than 400 members with a huge diversity of knowledge and experience, and I am proud to be a part of it – although I still clearly remember worrying about my application and hoping it was good enough to get me accepted!
The membership now includes many very well-known names and faces, but celebrity is only a part of the whole picture. The greater part is made up of people who work hard at inspiring and educating the public through their writings, broadcasts, and culinary and editorial skills.
Some of that skill was brought together in 2010 when Simon & Schuster published our first book
How the British Fell in Love with Food, a compilation of writing and recipes published over the last quarter of a century by some of our most influential members. I'm thrilled to say that it won the Gourmand World Cookbook Award for Best Culinary History Book that year, and the profits from it will help us to continue our pioneering work encouraging young people to cook and to write about food with our two competitions -
CookIt! and
WriteIt!
We run a wonderful diary of events and offer good professional advice so I would like to thank the committee members who keep our organisation up and running so well, and appeal to all other members to become more involved and show your support whenever and wherever possible. Our website is also here to help both members and visitors, by keeping you up to date with all GFW activities.
Best wishes and here's to a successful 2012!
